Beard Butter vs Beard Oil: Which Do You Need?
This is one of the most searched beard care questions there is, and the honest answer is that oil and butter are not really competing products. They solve slightly different problems.
Side by side
Beard oil
- Liquid, absorbs fast
- Lightest feel of the three product types
- Reaches the skin underneath easily
- Ideal for daily, all over conditioning
Beard butter
- Whipped, semi-solid
- Sits slightly longer on the hair
- Adds a touch more softness and weightless texture
- Ideal for coarser or drier beards
Do you need both?
Plenty of people use only one and get on fine. But if your beard runs dry, coarse or prone to flyaways, layering both gets you the best of each: oil first to condition the skin and shorter hairs, then a small amount of butter worked through the length for extra softness and control.
Shorter beards and stubble often do fine on oil alone. Longer or thicker beards tend to benefit most from adding butter into the mix, particularly overnight or in colder months.
Layering order, if you use both
- Start with oil on a towel dried, slightly damp beard, working it down to the skin.
- Follow with butter once the oil has settled for a minute, focusing on the mid lengths and ends.
- Comb through to distribute evenly and shape as needed.
What is better, beard oil or beard butter?
Neither is strictly better. Oil suits daily, lightweight conditioning and shorter beards. Butter suits drier, coarser or longer beards that need a bit more softness. Many people find using both, in the order above, gives the best result.
Do you need both beard oil and beard butter?
Not necessarily, but if you have a longer or coarser beard, using both tends to outperform either one alone.
